Former Australian cricket star opener David Warner has landed in another controversy after admitting his mistake in a drink-driving case before a court. The development has become a major talking point in cricket circles.
A court has scheduled August 18 to decide the punishment in the case registered against Warner. The issue has not only raised questions about his personal conduct but has also sparked discussions over whether he will continue as the Sydney Thunder captain.
Warner Accepts Drink-Driving Charge Through Lawyer
The hearing in the case took place on Wednesday at the Waverley Local Court. However, Warner himself did not appear before the court.
His lawyer Bobby Hill informed the court that Warner had accepted the charge of driving with a mid-range alcohol concentration. The lawyer also said that discussions between both parties regarding certain aspects of the case were still ongoing.
Incident Took Place on April 5
The incident occurred on April 5, when Warner returned to Australia after taking a break from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Police stopped him for a roadside check in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. After conducting an initial test, officers took him to the Maroubra Police Station, where a breathalyser test was carried out.
The test recorded his blood alcohol level at 0.104, which was more than twice the legal limit permitted in Australia. Following this, authorities registered a case against him.
Warner Drank Three Glasses of Wine Before Driving
According to Warner’s lawyer, the cricketer had consumed three glasses of wine at a friend’s apartment before the incident.
The lawyer told the court that police stopped Warner just 11 minutes after he had his last drink.
Warner reportedly accepted that he should have taken a taxi or an Uber instead of driving himself. He admitted that his decision was a serious mistake and expressed deep regret over his actions.
His lawyer added that Warner is ready to accept the court’s punishment like any ordinary citizen.
Questions Raised Over Sydney Thunder Captaincy
The controversy has also created uncertainty over Warner’s future as the Sydney Thunder captain.
The team management has not yet released any official statement regarding the matter. However, Cricket NSW Chief Executive Lee Germon said the organisation was taking the issue very seriously.
He made it clear that Cricket NSW does not support drink-driving under any circumstances and that there will be no compromise on road safety.
Controversy Amid Anti-Drink Driving Campaign
The issue has gained further attention because Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, and NSW Blues are partners in the state government’s “Don’t Drink and Drive” awareness campaign.
The fact that a captain of one of the teams involved in such an initiative has faced drink-driving allegations has led to widespread criticism and debate.
Warner’s Past Leadership Controversy
This is not the first major controversy in Warner’s career.
In 2018, he faced a lifetime leadership ban following the Sandpaper Gate ball-tampering scandal. The ban was lifted in 2024, allowing him to take over as captain of Sydney Thunder.
Now, with the latest drink-driving case, questions have emerged over whether Warner will continue in his leadership role or face another setback.
