The Indian women’s cricket team could have a new captain soon, with star opener Smriti Mandhana emerging as the leading candidate to replace Harmanpreet Kaur. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering handing Mandhana the leadership role across formats.
Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as India women’s captain shortly after the team won the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. She had been leading the Indian side since 2012, bringing an end to one of the longest captaincy tenures in women’s international cricket.
Mandhana, who served as Harmanpreet’s deputy, has already gained considerable leadership experience. She has captained India on several occasions when Harmanpreet was unavailable, making her a strong contender for the top job.
The BCCI could announce Mandhana as captain while selecting the Indian squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series, which is expected to include three T20Is and three ODIs.
Mandhana has also produced an impressive record as captain. Between 2024 and 2025, she led India in four ODIs and won all four matches. In T20Is, she took charge in Harmanpreet’s absence in 18 matches and recorded 11 wins and six defeats in 17 completed games.
BCCI Looking at 2028 Olympics and Next World Cup
The Indian cricket board is reportedly looking at the next Women’s World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics while planning the team’s future leadership structure. Building the side around Mandhana could provide continuity as India prepares for major international tournaments.
Mandhana’s international experience, consistent batting performances and previous captaincy exposure make her a natural candidate to succeed Harmanpreet Kaur.
However, the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement on India women’s new captain. The final decision is expected when the squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series is announced.
