Andhra Pradesh municipal elections are gaining political momentum as parties prepare to select candidates and finalise campaign strategies. While the election authorities are making arrangements for polling, seat-sharing negotiations between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party have become a major political talking point.
The main focus is on Jana Sena’s reported demand for a larger share of seats and key posts in urban local bodies. Meanwhile, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is also reviewing his party’s election preparations.
Andhra Pradesh Municipal Election Preparations Underway
Election preparations are progressing across Andhra Pradesh’s municipal corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats. The state has 17 municipal corporations and 106 municipalities, along with other urban local bodies.
According to the information provided, the first phase of preparations covers 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities. Officials are also preparing for elections in the remaining 23 urban local bodies in a subsequent phase.
Authorities are working on finalising polling station lists and transporting election materials to district headquarters. Political parties are simultaneously focusing on candidate selection and local campaign planning.
YS Jagan Reviews YSRCP Election Strategy
YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has stepped up preparations for the upcoming municipal elections. Party sources said he held a meeting with regional coordinators for more than six hours to review the party’s position across districts.
The discussions reportedly covered candidate selection, local political conditions, campaign strategies and election readiness. The party is also expected to finalise its candidates for mayoral and municipal chairperson positions.
YSRCP’s preparations come as the ruling alliance continues discussions over seat allocation and leadership positions in urban local bodies.
Jana Sena Reportedly Seeks 40% Share in Municipal Elections
Seat-sharing negotiations between TDP and Jana Sena have attracted attention ahead of the municipal elections. Reports suggesting that Jana Sena could receive three mayoral posts and around 17% of the seats have triggered speculation about dissatisfaction within sections of the party.
However, Jana Sena leaders are reportedly seeking a larger share of seats and leadership positions in local bodies.
Social media posts attributed to Jana Sena leader and minister Kandukuri Durgesh have added a new dimension to the debate. According to the proposals circulating online, Jana Sena is seeking approximately 40.1% of the combined positions across municipal corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats.
The reported proposal covers mayoral posts, deputy mayor positions, standing committee chairperson posts, municipal chairperson roles and elected ward-level positions.
Jana Sena’s Demand for Mayor and Councillor Positions
The figures circulating on social media indicate that Jana Sena is seeking a significant share of leadership positions in urban local bodies.
The reported demands include:
- Mayor posts: Six positions, based on the proposed allocation formula.
- Deputy mayor posts: Six positions.
- Standing committee chairperson posts: Five positions.
- Municipal leadership: A share of chairperson and vice-chairperson positions.
- Ward-level representation: Around 40% of councillor and corporator seats, according to the circulating proposal.
The overall proposal reportedly seeks 2,091 positions, accounting for approximately 40.1% of the combined positions covered by the proposed formula.
However, these figures are based on information circulating on social media. An official confirmation from the TDP-Jana Sena alliance is still awaited.
TDP-Jana Sena Seat-Sharing Talks Become a Political Issue
The reported demand has triggered debate among supporters of both alliance partners. Some TDP supporters have criticised the public discussion of seat-sharing demands, while Jana Sena supporters argue that the party deserves adequate representation in local bodies.
The issue has also raised questions about whether publicly discussing the proposed allocation could affect negotiations between the two parties.
There is further political speculation about whether Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan has approved the public presentation of these demands. However, no official confirmation has established his position on the reported proposal.
The final allocation will depend on negotiations between the alliance partners and any formal announcement they make.
What the Seat-Sharing Dispute Means for the Alliance
The municipal elections will test the coordination between TDP and Jana Sena at the local level. While both parties are part of the ruling alliance in Andhra Pradesh, distributing seats and leadership positions across urban local bodies could prove challenging.
Jana Sena’s reported demand for a 40% share has placed the focus on how the alliance plans to balance the electoral influence and political expectations of its partners.
At the same time, YSRCP is working on its candidate selection and campaign strategy in an effort to strengthen its position in local elections.
The final seat-sharing agreement, TDP’s response to Jana Sena’s demands and the official election schedule will be key developments to watch in Andhra Pradesh municipal politics.
For now, the reported 40% demand remains a subject of political discussion, with the alliance’s final decision yet to be officially announced.
