The Supreme Court on October 27 heard a petition concerning allegations that YSRCP candidates were prevented from filing nominations for the ongoing Andhra Pradesh municipal elections. The court said the issue would continue to be examined and directed that CCTV footage related to the nomination process be preserved.
The court also observed that the High Court could examine complaints and evidence regarding alleged obstruction of nominations.
YSRCP Alleges Obstruction of Nomination Process
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) alleged that its candidates were prevented from filing nominations and faced threats during the nomination process. The party’s counsel told the Supreme Court that several candidates were still unable to submit their nominations despite the court’s earlier directions.
The counsel sought relief for candidates who could not file nominations for municipal elections as well as ZPTC elections. The party urged the court to ensure that these candidates received a fair opportunity to contest.
SEC’s Role Under Scrutiny
The developments have raised questions about the functioning of the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC). The complaints have brought the fairness and transparency of the nomination process into focus.
The Election Commission is expected to examine the complaints impartially and take decisions based on available evidence. Ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates remains a key concern in the ongoing election process.
The preservation of CCTV footage could help authorities examine allegations of obstruction and establish the facts. The next steps will depend on the examination of complaints and evidence by the competent authorities.
