The upcoming local body elections in Andhra Pradesh are reportedly exposing growing differences between the ruling alliance partners, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party. While disagreements and an apparent cold war between the cadres of the two parties are being reported at the grassroots level, political observers have alleged that sections of the TDP-friendly media are attempting to project an “all is well” picture within the alliance.
Chandrababu-Pawan Photo Sparks Political Debate
Political circles are also discussing the way a recent cabinet meeting report was presented by Eenadu. Instead of prominently featuring photographs directly related to the cabinet meeting, the report highlighted an image of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan walking together towards the meeting.
The choice of the photograph has triggered discussion amid reports of differences between the two alliance partners over seat-sharing for the upcoming local body elections.
Jana Sena Cadre Seeks Greater Share
Jana Sena leaders and cadres are reportedly keen to contest from constituencies and local bodies where the party has a strong organisational presence. However, reports that the party would be allocated only around 15 percent of the seats, with the share allegedly finalised by TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh, have reportedly caused resentment among sections of the Jana Sena cadre.
The issue has added to the differences being reported at the grassroots level, where workers from the two parties are said to be engaged in disagreements over the distribution of seats.
Pawan Kalyan’s Strong Remarks in Kakinada
Pawan Kalyan recently responded strongly to the issue at a public meeting in Kakinada. Addressing Jana Sena cadre, he said that seats were not something to be given as charity and called on party workers to secure them through their own strength.
His remarks have been viewed in political circles as an indication of the differences within the alliance over seat-sharing. Even before Pawan Kalyan’s comments, sections of the Jana Sena’s second-rung leadership and cadre had reportedly expressed disappointment over the proposed allocation of seats at the grassroots level.
TDP-Friendly Media Under Focus
Meanwhile, there are allegations that sections of the TDP-friendly media are making efforts to convey that there are no serious differences within the ruling alliance.
Against this backdrop, the prominent display of Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan’s photograph in the cabinet meeting report has attracted attention. Critics argue that the differences over seat-sharing have already become visible to political observers, party workers and the media.
Pawan Kalyan’s remarks at the Kakinada meeting have also received considerable public attention, further fuelling the discussion over the alliance’s internal dynamics.
Seat-Sharing Disputes Remain a Key Challenge
Political analysts say that attempts to project an “all is well” picture may not be enough to address dissatisfaction among cadres if disagreements over seat-sharing continue at the grassroots level.
The ongoing tussle over the distribution of seats for the local body elections is being closely watched, as the negotiations could reveal the extent of coordination between the TDP and Jana Sena at the local level.
While both parties remain alliance partners in the Andhra Pradesh government, the manner in which the local body seat-sharing process is handled could have a bearing on relations between their cadres and local leadership.
