Concerns Grow Over Quality of Government Construction Projects
There is a debate happening in Andhra Pradesh about the quality and safety of big government construction projects. Recently there have been incidents that have raised serious concerns about engineering standards, supervision and accountability in state-funded infrastructure projects.
Some of these incidents include steel girders in the under-construction Amaravati steel bridge cracks in the Handri–Neeva canal lining and a tragic wall collapse at Simhachalam that killed devotees.
Many of these projects were. Executed during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party government led by N. Chandrababu Naidu. So criticism about construction quality and project management has increased.
Amaravati Steel Bridge Raises Questions Before Completion
The Amaravati steel bridge project has come under criticism after steel girders reportedly bent before the completion of construction works. This has raised questions about engineering standards, material quality and monitoring mechanisms involved in the project.
People are saying that a project built with public expenditure should not have such structural issues at an unfinished stage. Although officials say it’s a technical problem public concern continues to grow.
Handri–Neeva Canal Works Face Allegations of Poor Quality
There are quality concerns in the Handri–Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project particularly in the Punganur and Kuppam branch canals. These canal works were earlier showcased as symbols of development and irrigation expansion.
However recent reports of canal lining cracks appearing soon after water release have sparked criticism. People are saying that quality shotcreting and improper construction over unstable soil layers may have contributed to the damage.
Simhachalam Wall Collapse Shocks the State
The wall collapse during the Simhachalam Chandrotsavam deeply shocked Andhra Pradesh. The incident resulted in the deaths of seven devotees. Triggered widespread grief and anger.
Earlier Amaravati Buildings Also Faced Criticism
This is not the first time infrastructure projects associated with Amaravati have faced scrutiny. Several buildings promoted as part of the “world-class capital” vision had drawn criticism over construction defects.

- Cracks in Pattiseema aqueduct joints
- Collapse of a wing wall in the Polavaram canal
- Pipeline failures in the Purushothapatnam lift irrigation scheme
- Collapse of a pillar during construction of the Vijayawada Kanaka Durga flyover
Experts Point to Weak Oversight and Political Pressure
Infrastructure experts believe that multiple systemic issues may be contributing to recurring construction failures. Concerns often highlighted include supervision during execution, lack of transparency in tender allocation and inadequate quality control mechanisms.
Public Confidence in Government Projects Under Pressure
From the Amaravati steel bridge and Handri–Neeva canals to Simhachalam and Polavaram repeated incidents are now fueling a debate across Andhra Pradesh. Whether sufficient importance has truly been given to construction quality and public safety in government projects.
As criticism grows, demands for investigations, independent quality audits and stronger accountability systems are becoming louder, across the state.
