Social Media Restrictions in Andhra Pradesh Trigger Debate Over Free Speech

Vijayawada, Sep 21: Restrictions imposed on social media accounts and posts in Andhra Pradesh have triggered a wider debate, with opposition parties, journalists, civil society groups and activists raising concerns over freedom of expression and democratic discourse.

Restrictions on YSRCP Social Media Accounts

The opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has objected to restrictions imposed on its official Facebook and Instagram accounts. The party alleged that digital platforms raising questions about public issues were being targeted.

YSRCP president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy criticised the reported restrictions, alleging that social media platforms questioning the government on public issues were being subjected to action.

Journalist Raises Questions Over ‘FBI’ Takedown Requests

At the same time, allegations have emerged that restrictions were also being imposed on social media posts by journalists.

Dhanya Rajendran, Editor-in-Chief of The News Minute, alleged on her X account that Andhra Pradesh Police had sent takedown requests concerning her posts using the name ‘FBI’. The issue drew reactions from several people, including retired IAS officer PV Ramesh.

Rajendran also questioned the action taken against the social media accounts of a Big TV anchor.

Civil Society Groups Also Raise Concerns

Allegations have further emerged regarding restrictions on social media content posted by human rights organisations and civil society groups.

The administrators of the ‘Stop Vizag Data Centres’ Instagram account said that the account had become unavailable in India. The platform had been raising questions about the construction of data centres in and around Visakhapatnam, including issues related to land use, water consumption, power requirements and environmental impact.

E.A.S. Sarma Seeks Inquiry Into Account Blocking

Former Union Secretary E.A.S. Sarma also responded to the issue, saying that he had urged officials of the Central Government to investigate the blocking of the account.

Concerns have been raised that if action is taken against social media accounts or posts without following due legal procedures, it could have implications for freedom of expression and public debate.

Growing Debate Over Social Media Restrictions

The allegations of restrictions have now extended from the social media accounts of opposition political parties to those of journalists, human rights organisations and civil society movements.

The issue has triggered a broader debate among political and civil society groups in Andhra Pradesh over freedom of expression, transparency and the role of social media in democratic discourse.

Civil society groups have alleged that such actions could undermine the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution and affect democratic transparency.

Democratic activists have urged the coalition government to immediately refrain from what they describe as authoritarian actions and ensure governance in accordance with democratic principles. They also warned that continued restrictions could lead to public mobilisation against what they perceive as undemocratic governance.
