With local body elections in Andhra Pradesh approaching, seat-sharing among the coalition partners has emerged as a politically sensitive issue. Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan’s latest statement has triggered fresh debate within the alliance. He made it clear that the seat-sharing formula followed during the 2024 general elections will not automatically apply to the upcoming local body elections.
Pawan Kalyan Rules Out 2024 Formula
Pawan Kalyan said the political strategy adopted during the 2024 general elections was limited to those polls and should not be treated as a formula for the local elections. According to him, decisions for local body polls will be taken by considering the strength of each party at the regional level.
He indicated that Jana Sena would contest in areas where it has a strong organisational and electoral base. He also stressed that even in areas where the party does not have MLAs, the opinions and interests of Jana Sena cadres should not be ignored in the name of coalition dharma.
Pawan Kalyan also announced that a special committee would be formed to work on the party’s strategy for the local body elections.
Lokesh’s 80:15:5 Formula
Pawan Kalyan’s statement comes days after a meeting between TDP zonal coordinators and Minister Nara Lokesh, where the upcoming local body elections were reportedly discussed in detail.
According to reports, a possible 80:15:5 seat-sharing formula was discussed within the TDP. Under this arrangement, the TDP could contest around 80 percent of the seats, while Jana Sena and the BJP could contest approximately 15 percent and 5 percent respectively.
However, it was also reportedly discussed that the formula could be modified depending on local political conditions.
Pawan’s Stand Creates Fresh Questions
Pawan Kalyan’s latest comments have now raised questions over whether the reported 80:15:5 formula will actually be implemented.
While there appears to have been discussion within the TDP regarding a broad seat-sharing arrangement, Pawan Kalyan has emphasised that local conditions and the views of Jana Sena leaders and cadres will be important in deciding the final allocation.
This has led to speculation over whether the coalition partners will stick to a broad numerical formula or adopt a constituency- and region-specific approach.
Will Jana Sena Demand a Larger Share?
The key question now is whether Jana Sena will settle for the reported 15 percent share or push for a larger allocation in areas where the party has significant support.
Pawan Kalyan’s emphasis on the party’s strength at the grassroots level suggests that Jana Sena may seek greater representation in selected local bodies rather than accepting a uniform formula across the state.
The final arrangement could therefore depend on the electoral strength and organisational presence of the three alliance partners in individual regions.

However, this remains political speculation, and whether such a strategy is actually being followed will become clear only in the coming days.
