With the local body elections likely to be held in October, the Andhra Pradesh Coalition Government appears to be shifting its focus once again towards welfare schemes. The issue of new pensions is reportedly emerging as a major headache for the ruling alliance. Despite the government entering its third year in office, it has so far failed to take a clear decision on sanctioning new pensions. This is said to be causing concern among TDP local leaders, particularly with the elections approaching.
TDP Leaders Face Questions from People
Whenever ministers and MLAs visit villages, they are reportedly facing questions from people about new pensions. However, local leaders are said to be struggling to provide a clear answer on when the government will begin sanctioning them.
TDP leaders at the mandal level reportedly believe that failure to provide new pensions before the local body elections could result in political damage to the ruling party. With pension beneficiaries being spread across almost every village, the issue could potentially influence voters at the grassroots level.
New Pension Process Under Previous Government
During the tenure of the previous YSR Congress government, applications for new pensions were reportedly invited once every six months, followed by the sanctioning of pensions to eligible beneficiaries.
YSR Congress leaders claim that the process continued even during the election year, with new pensions being sanctioned in accordance with the government’s welfare calendar.
However, opposition parties allege that the process came to a halt after the change in government. They claim that applications for new pensions have not been accepted since then, leaving many eligible people waiting for assistance.
Thousands Waiting for New Pensions
According to reports, elderly people and widowed women who have been waiting for new pensions for nearly three years are present in almost every village.
Local TDP leaders are reportedly saying that each mandal may require around 2,000 new pensions to meet the demand from eligible beneficiaries.
This has reportedly increased concerns within the ruling party that the pension issue could turn into a major disadvantage ahead of the local body elections.
Opposition Targets ₹1,500 Monthly Assistance and Free Gas Scheme
At the same time, opposition parties are reportedly highlighting dissatisfaction over the implementation of the promise to provide ₹1,500 per month to women, as well as the free gas cylinder scheme.
There are also allegations that eligible beneficiaries are not receiving justice in matters relating to disability pensions, old-age pensions and pensions for dialysis patients.
Opposition parties are using these issues to argue that the government’s welfare commitments have not been fully implemented.
Welfare Could Become Key Election Issue
With new pensions, women’s financial assistance, free gas cylinders and various welfare pensions becoming subjects of public discussion, welfare is likely to emerge as one of the biggest political challenges for the Coalition Government in the upcoming local body elections.
TDP local leaders are reportedly urging the government leadership to make a clear announcement on new pensions at least before the local body elections and attempt to pacify beneficiaries who have been waiting for years.
Announcement or Actual Sanction?
The key question now is whether the government will merely make an announcement before the elections or actually begin the process of sanctioning new pensions.
If the government takes concrete steps to approve and distribute new pensions, it could help address some of the concerns among beneficiaries. On the other hand, if the issue remains unresolved, opposition parties are likely to make it a major campaign issue during the local body elections.
With the elections approaching, the political impact of the new pension issue on the Coalition Government has therefore become a matter of considerable interest.
