More than a year after the tragic accident at the Visakha Steel Plant claimed the life of a worker, his family says they are still fighting for justice, struggling to cope with emotional trauma and financial hardship while waiting for meaningful support from the authorities.
The case has now raised uncomfortable questions about worker safety at one of the state’s largest industrial units and the Andhra Pradesh government’s response to families devastated by industrial accidents.
A Family’s Life Changed Forever
Balireddy Pentayya, a Junior Technician at the Visakha Steel Plant, suffered severe injuries in a molten steel leakage accident on March 14, 2025. Despite undergoing treatment for weeks, he succumbed to his injuries on April 1.
Pentayya was the sole breadwinner of his family. His death not only left an emotional void but also pushed his family into uncertainty about their future.
Months later, his family says they are yet to receive adequate justice and support.
Safety Warnings Were Allegedly Ignored
Pentayya’s son, Prasad, has made serious allegations regarding the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
According to him, his father had repeatedly expressed concerns about safety issues within the steel plant before the accident took place. He claims that these warnings were brought to the attention of officials but were ignored.
The family believes that the accident was not merely an unfortunate incident but the result of weak safety standards and failure to address known risks.
If these allegations are true, they point to a deeply troubling culture where production priorities may have overshadowed worker safety.
Questions Over Safety Standards at Visakha Steel Plant
The tragedy has reignited concerns over industrial safety practices at the Visakha Steel Plant.
Workers in hazardous environments depend on strict adherence to safety protocols, regular maintenance, timely inspections, and prompt action on complaints. Any lapse can have devastating consequences.
Critics argue that Pentayya’s death should prompt a thorough review of safety mechanisms within the plant to determine whether adequate precautions were in place and whether earlier intervention could have prevented the accident.
For the family, however, these questions are no longer theoretical. They have already paid the highest price.
Compensation Delayed, Family Left in Distress
Following Pentayya’s death, his family hoped that authorities would extend immediate support and ensure that all compensation and benefits were provided without delay.
However, Pentayya’s wife, Venkatalakshmi, says they have received little meaningful assistance so far.
According to her, the family approached officials multiple times seeking help, only to be met with repeated assurances and delays. Promises of support, she says, have not translated into action.
The prolonged wait has intensified criticism of the government’s handling of the issue.
Critics argue that while governments often speak about standing with workers, true commitment is tested in moments like these—when grieving families need timely support, financial security, and compassionate intervention.
Allegations of Pressure Before Meeting Jagan
The controversy deepened after the family decided to meet former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
According to family members, representatives associated with the steel plant and certain local leaders contacted them after learning about their plans.
They allege that offers of employment and assurances that their problems would be resolved were made in an attempt to discourage them from meeting Jagan and publicly raising their concerns.
These allegations have sparked political debate, with opposition leaders questioning why a bereaved family should face such circumstances while seeking justice.
Jagan Extends Support
The family eventually met Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy at Seven Hills Hospital in Visakhapatnam and explained the difficulties they had been facing.
After hearing their concerns, Jagan reportedly brought the issue before the media and assured the family of his support. He promised to stand by them in their efforts to secure justice, compensation, employment benefits, and other assistance due to them.
Failure to Deliver Justice?
The continued distress faced by Pentayya’s family has become a matter of public concern.
Critics say the Chandrababu Naidu-led government has failed to ensure timely justice for the family of a worker who lost his life while performing his duties. They question why compensation and rehabilitation measures have been delayed despite the seriousness of the incident.
The case has also exposed what many describe as a gap between official promises and ground-level implementation.
Beyond Politics: A Question of Accountability
The story of Balireddy Pentayya is not just about one family’s personal tragedy.
It raises larger questions about industrial safety, accountability, workers’ welfare, and the responsibilities of governments and public sector institutions toward employees who risk their lives every day.
Could this tragedy have been prevented if safety concerns had been addressed earlier? Why has compensation been delayed for so long? Were attempts made to influence the family’s decisions when they sought help elsewhere?
These questions remain unanswered.
Until clear answers emerge and the family receives the support it deserves, Pentayya’s death will continue to stand as a painful reminder that the true measure of governance lies not in promises made, but in justice delivered to those who need it the most.
