ISRO Achieves Major Milestone with Successful Gaganyaan Main Parachute Test

Successful Test Boosts Confidence in India’s First Human Space Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved another significant milestone in its ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme by successfully testing the Main Parachute System, a critical component designed for the safe return of astronauts. The successful test further strengthens confidence in the mission’s safety and reliability.

Air-Drop Test Conducted from 2.5 km Altitude

The test was carried out at the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) drop zone in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh. An Indian Air Force IL-76 aircraft released a dummy payload from an altitude of 2.5 kilometres. During the trial, the main parachute deployed successfully, effectively slowing down the payload before ensuring a safe landing.

Critical Role of the Main Parachute

The Gaganyaan Crew Module, which will bring astronauts back safely from space, relies on a sophisticated 10-parachute recovery system for its splashdown in the sea. Among these, the Main Parachute plays the most crucial role by significantly reducing the module’s descent speed before landing. The successful qualification of this system marks a major achievement in ensuring astronaut safety.

Boost for the Upcoming G1 Uncrewed Mission

According to ISRO, the successful test has further validated the performance and reliability of the parachute system required for the upcoming G1 uncrewed mission, the first test flight in the Gaganyaan programme before astronauts are sent into space.
