A debate has erupted in Andhra Pradesh over the growing gap between the government’s claims regarding investments and employment generation and the actual situation on the ground. The latest data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), presented by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment in Parliament, indicates that the unemployment rate in the state has not declined and has, in some segments, increased.
Unemployment Rate in Andhra Pradesh Rises to 4.2%
According to the latest data released by the Central Government, Andhra Pradesh recorded an unemployment rate of 4.1% during the 2023–24 financial year. However, the rate has now increased to 4.2%.
The situation appears more concerning in urban areas, where the unemployment rate rose from 5.9% to 6.2%. In rural areas, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.4%.
The unemployment situation among young people is even more worrying. Among those aged between 15 and 29, the unemployment rate stood at a significantly high 16.2%.
Government Lists Schemes for Employment Generation
The Central Government has stated that several schemes are being implemented to promote employment generation, skill development, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), self-employment and apprenticeships.
However, the latest data raises questions over whether these schemes are being effectively utilised and whether they are creating adequate employment opportunities for the youth of Andhra Pradesh.
Growing Gap Between Government Claims and Ground Reality?
Against this backdrop, questions are being raised over the apparent mismatch between the official publicity of the Chandrababu Naidu government and the actual employment statistics.
The government has repeatedly highlighted investments, industrial development and job creation as major achievements. However, the latest PLFS data suggests that unemployment, particularly among urban youth, continues to remain a serious concern.
Government Faces Questions Over New Industries and Permanent Jobs
Many are now demanding that the state government release clear and transparent data on the employment generated during the last two years.
How many new industries have actually been established in Andhra Pradesh? How many permanent jobs have been created through these investments? How many local youth have secured employment?
The government needs to provide concrete answers to these questions. Unless clear data on investments, industries and actual employment generation is made public, doubts are likely to continue over the difference between official claims and the ground reality in Andhra Pradesh.
