Chandrababu Backs ECI Decision.. Faces Strong Criticism on Social Media!

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has come under renewed public and political scrutiny following a series of investigative reports by The Indian Express journalist Ritika Chopra on the poll panel’s internal functioning, voter registration process, election software and changes to Form 6.

A recent Indian Express report said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections to changes involving Form 6, the application used by new voters to register themselves on electoral rolls. The report said the changes introduced questions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Questions Over Form 6 and Election Software

The reports have also highlighted concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission’s technology systems and the management of electoral rolls.

According to The Indian Express, Sandhu and Joshi formally objected to several decisions over a period of months. The reported issues included changes to Form 6, centralisation of controls over the electoral-roll software and questions concerning voter additions and deletions.

The reports have triggered a wider debate over transparency in voter registration and electoral-roll revision. The Election Commission, however, has rejected the suggestion that there was a formal institutional split over the SIR exercise.

Election Commission Issues Clarification

Following the reports, the Election Commission said that decisions relating to the SIR and other major electoral matters had been taken with the approval of all three Election Commissioners.

The Commission comprises Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. An official clarification said the decisions were taken collectively and unanimously.

The ECI’s subsequent meetings also resulted in several decisions addressing concerns raised in the controversy, although The Indian Express reported that questions surrounding Form 6 and some other matters remained unresolved.

Cockroach Janata Party Demands Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

The controversy also prompted a political response from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The party demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and announced that it would launch a wider protest campaign if he did not step down. The CJP’s demand was linked to the controversy surrounding voter-list revisions and the concerns reported about the functioning of the Election Commission.

The party has also announced plans for protests in different parts of the country. These are demands and allegations made by the organisation and should be distinguished from findings independently established by the Election Commission or courts.

Chandrababu Naidu Welcomes ECI Clarification

The controversy took another political turn after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu responded to the Election Commission’s clarification.

Naidu said the unanimous clarification reaffirmed the integrity and credibility of constitutional institutions and would put to rest misconceptions surrounding the Election Commission. He also said that attempts to undermine public confidence in the electoral system for short-term political interests were a matter of concern.

Naidu stressed that political leadership in a democracy involves accepting both victories and defeats with dignity and respecting constitutional institutions. His comments were reported by multiple news organisations following the ECI clarification.

Social Media Debate Over Naidu’s Earlier Statements

However, Chandrababu Naidu’s latest remarks have drawn mixed reactions on social media.

Sourav Das, Co-Convenor of the Cockroach Janata Party, reacted to Naidu’s comments by asking, “Will you do anything for the thirst for power?”

Several other social media users have also brought up Naidu’s earlier statements. In particular, they have recalled his criticism in 2019 of the central government and his concerns over the autonomy of constitutional institutions.

ECI Controversy Remains a Political Issue

The latest controversy has brought voter registration, electoral-roll revision, Form 6 changes and the use of election software back into the national political debate.

The Indian Express investigation reported formal objections from two Election Commissioners, while the ECI has maintained that its major decisions were taken collectively.

The issue is therefore being debated on two levels: questions raised by the reported internal objections and the Election Commission’s subsequent clarification that its decisions were taken unanimously.

As political parties and civil-society groups continue to debate the issue, transparency in voter registration, electoral-roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission are likely to remain important subjects of public discussion.
