Andhra Pradesh, Sep 17: A fresh controversy has erupted in Andhra Pradesh over the removal of social media posts. A takedown request reportedly sent to the ‘X’ platform from the official email address of the Guntur police mentioned “FBI” as the name of the organisation. The issue has triggered a political debate in the state.
The ‘X’ platform initially reportedly treated the complaint as having been submitted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It later clarified that the request had actually originated from the Andhra Pradesh Police, according to several reports.
Jagan Questions Chandrababu Government
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy responded to the controversy and raised several questions over the Chandrababu Naidu government.
Jagan sarcastically remarked that “Red Book governance” had now reached the global level. He questioned whether Andhra Pradesh Police had presented themselves as the US FBI while attempting to get social media posts removed from ‘X’.
Questions Over Social Media Takedown Requests
Jagan questioned whether such actions were being taken to suppress criticism over issues including the unfulfilled Super Six promises, allegations surrounding DSC recruitments, alleged corruption-related issues in Amaravati, the state’s debts, governance failures, and alleged harassment of those questioning the government.
The controversy has raised several questions: Why did the Andhra Pradesh Police use the name “FBI”? Who authorised the takedown request? Were senior police officials aware of it? And how many social media accounts have received similar complaints?
The government and the police department are yet to provide a clear official explanation on these issues.
Ongoing Dispute Over Social Media Content Removal
Political and legal disputes over the removal of social media content have been continuing in Andhra Pradesh. Legal reports said that the Supreme Court, on August 25, declined to entertain a petition concerning the takedown of posts from social media accounts associated with the YSRCP and directed the petitioners to approach the High Court.
The latest controversy involving the use of the FBI name has added another dimension to the ongoing debate over government requests for social media content removal.
Official Explanation Awaited
The controversy has now centred on whether the government will respond to the allegations surrounding the takedown request and explain how the name “FBI” came to be used.
Questioning government policies and decisions is a normal part of democratic discourse. However, the use of the FBI name in an official takedown request has become an issue for which an official clarification from the concerned authorities is being sought.
