AP Government Media Spending: Questions Over Republic TV, India Today Events and Public Funds

The Andhra Pradesh government’s participation in high-profile national media events after the coalition government came to power has triggered questions over public spending, particularly in connection with Minister Nara Lokesh’s participation in such programmes.

In June 2026, the Andhra Pradesh government reportedly acted as a State Sponsor for the Republic TV Annual Summit held at the Taj Hotel in New Delhi. Government orders reportedly show that Rs 43.83 lakh was released for the event. Nara Lokesh also participated in a special interview at the summit.

The government’s involvement in national media platforms has once again come under discussion after Andhra Pradesh was listed as an official State Sponsor Partner for the India Today Conclave held recently in Kochi. The announcement on the organisation’s website has raised questions in political circles about the government’s role in media events and the public money being spent on such programmes.

Questions Over Public Money and Media Sponsorship

The government’s participation as a sponsor in major national media events has led to a wider debate over the purpose and priority of public expenditure.

Critics are questioning whether government funds should be used for sponsorships and promotional platforms involving senior political leaders when several welfare and development-related areas continue to face funding concerns.

The issue has gained further attention because the government has also introduced a policy to formally empanel social media influencers for government publicity.

AP Government’s Social Media Influencer Policy

Under the new policy, eligible social media influencers can be selected to promote government welfare schemes, development programmes and public information through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X.

The policy is aimed at expanding the government’s digital outreach and communicating its programmes to a wider audience. However, its introduction has also raised questions over the extent of public funds being allocated for government publicity and promotional activities.

Opposition Questions Government Priorities

Opposition parties have been questioning the government over funding for welfare schemes, employee-related issues, fee reimbursement, Aarogyasri dues and farmers’ concerns.

At the same time, they have alleged that the coalition government is relying heavily on borrowings. Against this backdrop, questions are being raised about how public funds are being prioritised and whether adequate resources are being allocated to core welfare and development needs.

The debate is not simply about individual media events. It is increasingly focused on the broader question of Andhra Pradesh government publicity expenditure and the use of public money for image-building activities.

Welfare Spending vs Publicity Expenditure

The government has repeatedly highlighted financial constraints while implementing several promised schemes and addressing pending dues. This has led to criticism over whether spending on national media events, political visibility and social media promotion should receive priority.

The central question being raised is whether funds meant for public welfare and development are being diverted towards publicity and the promotion of the government’s political image.

The controversy is therefore likely to continue as the Andhra Pradesh government expands its presence across national media platforms and strengthens its social media outreach.
