Centuries-Old Hanuman Idol Disappears from Tirumala
The disappearance of a centuries-old Lord Hanuman idol in Tirumala has triggered widespread concern among devotees and temple followers. The idol, located along the steps near the First Ghat Road, is revered by thousands of pilgrims who visit it every day while making their journey to the Tirumala temple.
The idol holds significant religious importance, and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) traditionally conducts special prayers there on Hanuman Jayanti every year. News of the idol’s disappearance has left devotees shocked and raised serious questions about temple security.
Bhumana Karunakar Reddy Alleges Security Failure
Former TTD Chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy strongly criticized the incident, calling it a major security lapse. He alleged that the theft was captured on CCTV cameras, but efforts are allegedly being made to portray the accused as mentally unstable in order to dilute the seriousness of the case.
He further stated that incidents involving religious disrespect and security failures have become increasingly common in Tirumala. According to him, both the Andhra Pradesh government and the TTD governing body should accept responsibility and ensure accountability.
Fresh Debate Over Temple Safety
The missing Hanuman idol has reignited discussions about several recent incidents involving temples and religious properties in Andhra Pradesh. These include:
- The mysterious deaths of peacocks in Tiruchanur
- Alleged illegal constructions on temple lands
- Reported desecration of village deity idols
- Demolition of ancient temples
- Concerns over the protection of heritage religious sites
These incidents have intensified public debate over the effectiveness of temple administration and security mechanisms.
Devotees Question Government’s Commitment
Many devotees have questioned why the government has not responded more firmly despite repeated incidents affecting temples and religious heritage. They argue that while protecting Hindu temples is often highlighted in public discourse, stronger action is needed on the ground to prevent such occurrences.
The disappearance of a centuries-old idol has further strengthened demands for stricter monitoring, improved surveillance, and greater accountability from temple authorities.
Demand for Comprehensive Temple Protection Measures
Devotees are now urging the government to move beyond promises and implement concrete measures for the protection of temples and religious idols. They have called for:
- A comprehensive report on attacks, idol thefts, and land encroachments involving temples during the past two years.
- Stronger security systems, including enhanced CCTV surveillance and regular monitoring.
- Better protection for village deity shrines and ancient temples.
- Swift investigation and strict action against those responsible for idol theft and vandalism.
Religious organizations and devotees believe that only decisive action and improved security arrangements can prevent similar incidents in the future and preserve the sanctity of Andhra Pradesh’s historic temples.
