The recent actions of the Andhra Pradesh police in neighboring Telangana have triggered a major political and media controversy across both Telugu states. The detention of senior journalist K.V. Reddy and Ravan, a representative of the YouTube channel Prashna, has sparked allegations that the police are increasingly targeting individuals who question or criticize those in power.
With journalist associations, civil society groups, and political observers demanding answers, concerns are growing over whether law enforcement is being used to suppress dissent instead of protecting democratic freedoms.
K.V. Reddy’s Family Alleges Midnight Detention Without Proper Explanation
According to the family of journalist K.V. Reddy, Andhra Pradesh police personnel arrived at their residence in Hyderabad during the night and took him into custody. The family alleges that although the officers claimed to possess a warrant, they did not clearly explain the grounds for the detention.
Family members also allege that residents in the locality questioned the police action, but their objections were ignored.
K.V. Reddy’s wife has further alleged that the police behaved disrespectfully towards her during the operation. She has reportedly lodged a complaint with the Telangana Police, seeking action over the manner in which the detention was carried out.
Previous Encounters With Andhra Pradesh Police Raise Fresh Questions
The latest incident has also revived discussion about K.V. Reddy’s earlier allegations against the Andhra Pradesh police.
According to the journalist, he was previously arrested by the Kurnool police without sufficient justification and subjected to harassment before securing relief from the High Court. He has also claimed that an earlier attempt by the Vijayawada police to detain him was halted after journalists in Telangana intervened.
Supporters argue that these repeated incidents suggest a pattern of action against journalists who raise uncomfortable questions about the government and its functioning.
Prashna YouTube Representative Also Detained
Adding to the controversy, reports indicate that Andhra Pradesh police also detained Ravan, associated with the YouTube channel Prashna.
The reported case relates to remarks he allegedly made during a public meeting in Eluru concerning Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Police reportedly suspect that the comments could promote disharmony between religious communities.
However, as of now, the Andhra Pradesh police have not publicly provided a detailed explanation regarding the legal basis for the detention.
Supporters Say Ravan Was Raising Questions, Not Inciting Hatred
Those supporting Ravan reject the allegations against him.
They argue that he merely referred to statements previously made by Pawan Kalyan himself while questioning why authorities had not acted against individuals accused of making derogatory remarks about Christianity.
According to his supporters, Ravan’s speech was intended as a warning that selective enforcement of the law could itself contribute to communal tensions, rather than encouraging hostility between communities.
Allegations of Selective Action Fuel Debate on Freedom of Expression
The detention of both a journalist and a YouTube commentator on the same day has intensified accusations that the Andhra Pradesh police are becoming increasingly intolerant of criticism.
Critics argue that individuals who question government policies, expose alleged administrative failures, or express dissent are facing legal action, creating what they describe as a chilling effect on free speech. They contend that instead of addressing the issues being raised, authorities appear to be targeting the messengers.
Supporters of the government, however, maintain that police action is being taken strictly in accordance with the law wherever offences are alleged, regardless of a person’s profession or political views.
Journalist Bodies and Civil Society Seek Transparency
The incidents have drawn the attention of journalist associations and civil society organizations, many of which have expressed concern over the manner in which the detentions were carried out.
Several voices have called for greater transparency from the Andhra Pradesh police, urging the department to clearly explain the legal grounds for the action and to ensure that constitutional protections for journalists and citizens are respected.
Until an official and detailed explanation is provided, the detentions are likely to remain at the center of political debate, with questions continuing over whether these actions represent legitimate law enforcement or an attempt to discourage critical voices from questioning those in authority.
