The ongoing local body elections in Andhra Pradesh have triggered allegations of electoral irregularities, intimidation of opposition candidates, and misuse of official machinery. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has questioned the impartiality of the State Election Commission (SEC), alleging that it has taken action in only one municipality despite reports of similar incidents across the state.
State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha announced the suspension of the election process in Maidhukur Municipality in YSR Kadapa district. The decision followed a report from the district collector stating that unidentified persons had entered a nomination centre on October 17 and allegedly tore up 19 nomination papers belonging to 18 candidates.
However, the SEC’s decision has raised questions about why similar action has not been taken in other municipalities and municipal corporations where opposition parties have alleged nomination-related irregularities.
Allegations of Nomination Papers Being Destroyed
The opposition has alleged that candidates were prevented from filing nominations in several parts of Andhra Pradesh. Videos circulating on social media reportedly show incidents in which nomination papers were allegedly snatched from returning officers and torn up.
YSRCP leaders have also claimed that opposition candidates, particularly those belonging to their party, were obstructed while attempting to submit nomination papers. Some incidents reportedly involved candidates being stopped near police stations and pushed away despite requesting officials to allow them to file their nominations.
The party argues that these incidents raise serious concerns about the fairness of the local body election process. It has questioned why the SEC suspended the election process only in Maidhukur despite allegations of similar incidents elsewhere.
Questions Over the State Election Commission’s Impartiality
The YSRCP has accused the State Election Commission of adopting a selective approach to complaints about electoral irregularities. According to the opposition, complaints and video evidence relating to alleged interference with nominations have emerged from multiple locations.
The party has questioned the effectiveness of security arrangements at nomination centres, pointing out that incidents allegedly occurred despite police deployment, CCTV surveillance, and video recording.
It has also demanded accountability from police personnel and other officials accused of failing to prevent the alleged destruction of nomination papers or obstruction of candidates.
The allegations have intensified the debate over the SEC’s responsibility to ensure a fair and transparent election process across Andhra Pradesh.
Opposition Questions Selective Action in Local Elections
The YSRCP has alleged that ruling coalition supporters attempted to intimidate opposition candidates and prevent them from contesting local body elections. The party claims that such incidents could help ruling alliance candidates secure seats without meaningful electoral competition.
Despite complaints and videos shared by opposition leaders, the party alleges that the SEC has not taken comparable action in all the affected areas.
The commission’s decision to suspend the election process in Maidhukur has therefore become a focal point of the controversy. The opposition wants the SEC to examine complaints from other municipalities and corporations and take action wherever violations are established.
Demand for Fair and Transparent Elections
The controversy has renewed calls for the State Election Commission to investigate complaints of nomination interference, examine available video evidence, and ensure that all eligible candidates receive a fair opportunity to contest.
The YSRCP has questioned whether the current response is sufficient to address the alleged irregularities across the state. It has urged the election authorities to apply the same standards to every municipality and municipal corporation.
The key issue now is whether the SEC will investigate the complaints from other areas and take appropriate action based on the evidence. Ensuring equal opportunities for candidates, protecting the nomination process, and maintaining public confidence in local elections remain central challenges for the election authorities.
Note: The allegations of political interference, intimidation, and selective action described in this report are attributed to the opposition party and have not been independently verified in this article.
