The Andhra Pradesh coalition government has repeatedly claimed that being part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre gives the state greater influence in New Delhi. Leaders have often highlighted the advantages of a “double engine government,” arguing that close coordination between the Centre and the state would bring greater benefits to Andhra Pradesh.
However, the latest revision in wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) has triggered fresh political debate. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) alleges that the modest wage increase granted to Andhra Pradesh raises serious questions about the coalition government’s ability to secure benefits from the Centre.
Andhra Pradesh Receives Only ₹5 Increase in MGNREGS Wages
According to the latest wage notification issued by the Central Government, the daily MGNREGS wage in Andhra Pradesh has increased from ₹307 to ₹312, reflecting a hike of just ₹5 per day.
The YSRCP argues that this is among the lowest increases in the country and does not match the coalition government’s claims of having significant influence with the Union Government.
Several States Receive Significantly Higher Wage Revisions
The wage revision has highlighted noticeable differences across states.
Some of the revised wage rates include:
- Andhra Pradesh: ₹307 → ₹312 (₹5 increase)
- Kerala: ₹369 → ₹401 (₹32 increase)
- Karnataka: ₹370 → ₹382 (₹12 increase)
- Tamil Nadu: ₹336 → ₹345 (₹9 increase)
The YSRCP claims that several states received increases ranging from ₹44 to ₹66, questioning why Andhra Pradesh received only a minimal revision despite the state’s political alignment with the Centre.
YSRCP Compares Wage Growth Under Jagan Government
The opposition party has also drawn comparisons between the previous YSRCP government and the present coalition administration.
According to YSRCP:
- Between 2019 and 2024, during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, MGNREGS wages in Andhra Pradesh increased by a total of ₹89.
- Since the coalition government assumed office in 2024, wages have reportedly increased by only ₹12 in total.
Based on these figures, the party asks why wage growth has slowed despite the coalition government’s close ties with the Centre.
“Where Is the Benefit of Political Influence?” Asks YSRCP
The YSRCP has intensified its criticism by questioning the coalition government’s repeated claims about its political strength at the national level.
The party points out that both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party are constituents of the NDA government at the Centre. Coalition leaders have frequently stated that Andhra Pradesh enjoys considerable influence in New Delhi because of this partnership.
YSRCP argues that if the state truly possesses such political leverage, Andhra Pradesh should have secured a more substantial increase in MGNREGS wages.
The party alleges that the coalition government has failed to convince the Centre to provide a fair wage revision for the state’s rural workers.
YSRCP Highlights Jagan Government’s Approach Toward the Centre
The opposition also contrasts the current situation with the previous administration.
YSRCP states that when Jagan Mohan Reddy was Chief Minister:
- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a full majority at the Centre.
- The YSRCP was not part of the NDA alliance.
Despite that, the party claims:
- MGNREGS wages increased substantially over five years.
- The state repeatedly pressed the Centre on Special Category Status.
- The government consistently raised issues related to Polavaram Project funding and pending commitments under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.
- It maintained an independent stand on matters affecting the state’s interests.
YSRCP argues that political alliances should not come at the cost of safeguarding Andhra Pradesh’s interests.
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Also Brought Into the Debate
The party has also referred to the issue of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
YSRCP claims that its government passed an Assembly resolution opposing the proposed privatization of the steel plant. It further argues that the state’s opposition delayed the privatization process and cites earlier remarks made by Union ministers regarding the issue.
According to the party, the previous government consistently challenged the Centre whenever state interests were involved.
“Double Engine or Trouble Engine?” Opposition Targets Coalition Government
The issue has become a major topic of discussion on social media, where YSRCP supporters have launched sharp criticism of the coalition government.
The party questions:
- If the coalition truly enjoys influence in Delhi, why did Andhra Pradesh receive only a ₹5 wage hike?
- What tangible benefits has the “double engine government” delivered to the state?
- Why has Andhra Pradesh failed to secure a larger wage increase while other states have received significantly higher revisions?
Some YSRCP leaders have gone further, describing the government as a “Trouble Engine Government” instead of a “Double Engine Government,” arguing that the promised benefits have not materialized.
Political Debate Intensifies Over Wage Revision
The modest increase of ₹5 in MGNREGS wages has now become a politically sensitive issue in Andhra Pradesh.
The opposition believes that comparisons with other states and with the previous YSRCP government’s record strengthen its criticism of the coalition administration. It argues that despite being a key partner in the NDA government, Andhra Pradesh has not received the level of benefits expected.
The coalition government is yet to present a detailed response to these allegations. As the debate continues, the MGNREGS wage revision is expected to remain a key point of political confrontation between the ruling alliance and the opposition in Andhra Pradesh.
