Allegations of Irregularities in AP 2024 Elections: Analysts and Civil Society Raise Questions

2024 Andhra Pradesh Elections: Questions Over Voting Data, Voter Lists and Election Process Resurface

Questions and allegations surrounding the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections have resurfaced, with renewed attention on voting figures, voter-list revisions, EVMs and the overall election process.

The debate comes amid wider concerns across India over the functioning of the Election Commission, revision of electoral rolls and the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs). Against this backdrop, analysts and political leaders are examining the 2024 Andhra Pradesh election voting data and raising questions about certain figures.

Questions Over Election Commission Appointment Process

The appointment process of the Chief Election Commissioner has also come under criticism from opposition parties. Following a 2023 Supreme Court judgment, changes were made to the legal framework governing the appointment of election commissioners in December 2023.

In March 2024, Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned. Within days, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were appointed as Election Commissioners. Opposition parties questioned the process and raised concerns over the independence of the Election Commission.

Difference Between Initial and Final Polling Figures

One of the key issues being discussed is the difference between the polling percentage initially reported on election day and the final figures.

On May 13, 2024, polling in Andhra Pradesh was reported at 68.04% by 5 pm. However, the final voter turnout was recorded at 81.79%.

The substantial difference between the initial and final polling figures has triggered questions from various quarters. Analysts have argued that the Election Commission should provide a clearer explanation of how the final figures were compiled and updated.

Parakala Prabhakar Raises Questions Over Late-Night Data

Economist and political analyst Parakala Prabhakar also examined the available election data and raised questions about the timing of vote entries.

According to the figures discussed by him, around 17,19,482 votes were recorded between 11:45 pm on May 13 and 2 am on May 14 across approximately 3,500 polling stations.

Prabhakar questioned how such a large number of votes appeared in the data during those late-night hours and sought greater clarity on the process through which the figures were recorded and reported.

VVPAT Counting Also Under Discussion

Former MP Undavalli Arun Kumar and others have also raised questions over the counting of VVPAT slips.

The debate has focused on whether a more comprehensive verification of VVPAT slips should be undertaken to strengthen public confidence in the election process.

These questions have added another dimension to the wider discussion over EVM and VVPAT verification in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh elections.

Prakash Raj Announces Study of AP 2024 Elections

The issue has gained fresh attention following comments by actor and social activist Prakash Raj.

Prakash Raj said that he was studying the 2024 Andhra Pradesh elections and would hold a press conference within two weeks with supporting evidence. He also raised questions concerning voter-list revisions, alleged deletion of voters and other aspects of the electoral process.

His announcement has brought renewed focus to the data and allegations surrounding the 2024 AP elections.

What the Election Data Shows

The controversy now revolves around several key questions:

  • Why was the initial polling percentage significantly lower than the final turnout?
  • How were the additional votes reflected in the final figures?
  • What explains the large number of votes recorded during the late-night reporting period?
  • What was the process followed for updating polling data?
  • Should there be wider VVPAT verification in Andhra Pradesh?
  • Were there irregularities in voter-list revision or voter deletions?

At this stage, these remain questions and allegations requiring verification, rather than established findings of electoral wrongdoing.

The renewed debate over the 2024 Andhra Pradesh election voting data highlights the importance of transparency and clear explanations from election authorities. Any detailed evidence presented by Prakash Raj or other stakeholders could add further information to the ongoing discussion over the conduct of the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
