Former Telangana minister and BRS Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao has criticised the Congress government, saying that farmers being forced to protest for free electricity near Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s native village, Kondareddypally, is a reflection of the government’s style of administration.
Harish Rao reacted to the flash protest and road blockade staged by farmers using tractors on the Srisailam–Hyderabad National Highway in Nagarkurnool district. He said the incident once again highlighted the serious electricity problems being faced by farmers across the state.
Congress Promised 24-Hour Free Power During Elections
Harish Rao reminded the Congress government of its election promise to provide farmers with 24 hours of quality and free electricity.
However, after coming to power, the government has allegedly failed to ensure even six to eight hours of uninterrupted power supply to the agricultural sector, he claimed.
Crops Drying Up Due to Power Shortages
Harish Rao alleged that thousands of acres of crops are drying up because of irregular electricity supply.
He said farmers, distressed over the situation and desperate to protect their crops, were being forced to come onto the roads and stage protests. Despite their repeated appeals and demonstrations, the government was allegedly failing to pay attention to their concerns.
Harish Rao Questions Government’s Response
Harish Rao questioned how a government that could not resolve the electricity problems of farmers in the Chief Minister’s own constituency and native region could address the concerns of lakhs of farmers across Telangana.
He asked whether farmers having to stage a protest on a national highway near the Chief Minister’s home for electricity was an indication of “people’s governance.”
‘Is the Change Promised by Congress Just Power Cuts?’
Harish Rao also questioned whether the “change” promised by the Congress government meant imposing power cuts on farmers.
He said the situation was particularly concerning because farmers were dependent on a reliable power supply to protect their standing crops.
BRS Demands Immediate Action
Harish Rao demanded that the government immediately take the concerns of farmers into consideration and resolve their electricity-related problems.
On behalf of the BRS, he urged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to intervene immediately and ensure 24-hour quality and free electricity supply to the agricultural sector.
He said the government must act swiftly to prevent further distress among farmers and protect standing crops across the state.
