The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a new approach to selecting players recovering from injuries. Under the proposed system, a player’s name may only be officially announced in the squad after there is complete clarity regarding his fitness.
The move comes after several instances in which players who had not fully recovered from injuries were selected for squads but later ruled themselves out of the series. These incidents have also raised questions about the functioning of the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
Fitness Status to Be Confirmed Before Final Selection
The BCCI is now looking at a system in which the fitness status of players will be closely monitored before their inclusion in the final squad.
The objective is to avoid situations where an injured or partially fit player is selected and subsequently forced to withdraw from the series. This would also help selectors make contingency plans well in advance.
Fitness Concerns Over Four Players
The Indian squad announced for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan reportedly includes special markings next to the names of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana.
The markings indicate that the fitness status of these players has not yet received final confirmation. Their participation will depend on the outcome of their respective fitness assessments.
VVS Laxman Explains the Proposed Approach
BCCI Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman has indicated that the fitness status of players will be communicated clearly in advance if they are not completely ready for a series.
According to the proposed approach, if a player fails to clear the required fitness test, the selectors will already have a replacement plan in place. This could help prevent last-minute changes to the squad and ensure that the team enters a series with a fully prepared group of players.
BCCI Secretary Explains Selection Timeline
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that squads for international series are generally required to be selected three to four weeks before the start of the series.
He explained that players who are not completely fit at the time of selection but are expected to recover before the series begins can still be considered for selection, subject to their fitness.
This approach allows the selectors to assess a player’s recovery timeline while keeping the final decision dependent on medical clearance.
Bumrah and Nitish Show Progress
Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy are reportedly making progress in their recovery and fitness assessments.
However, there is still some uncertainty surrounding Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar. Their availability will depend on further medical evaluations and fitness tests.
Final Decision After Full Medical Clearance
The final decision on the participation of the four players is expected to be taken only after the medical and fitness teams provide complete clearance.
If the BCCI implements the proposed system, it could bring greater transparency to player selection and reduce the chances of late withdrawals caused by unresolved fitness concerns.
