Major Change in Tata Group.. Chandrasekaran to Step Down as Chairman After 2027

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has made a key decision regarding his future at the helm of the Tata Group. He has reportedly made it clear that he is not interested in seeking another term as chairman after his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027. The development has sparked discussions over who could become the next chairman of the Tata Group.

N. Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987. He took charge as Chief Executive Officer of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 2009 and was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017.

Under Tata Sons, the group currently has more than 30 major companies, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had reportedly recommended extending Chandrasekaran’s tenure for another five years beyond 2027.

However, at a Tata Sons board meeting held on February 24, the proposal did not receive unanimous support after one board member reportedly withheld support.

Amid the situation, Chandrasekaran informed the board that he did not want his name to be considered for reappointment.

He also urged the board to select his successor at the earliest and ensure a smooth leadership transition. His decision is expected to accelerate discussions within the Tata Group over the choice of its next chairman.

Chandrasekaran has been associated with the Tata Group for nearly four decades. He is expected to remain in office until the completion of his current term in February 2027, after which he will step down as Tata Sons Chairman.

The upcoming leadership transition will be closely watched as the Tata Group prepares to identify a successor to one of its longest-serving senior leaders.
