A major security breach at Theni District Jail in Tamil Nadu has triggered widespread concern over prison security across the state. As many as 17 prisoners escaped from the jail in a single incident, prompting the CM Vijay-led government to take strict action against officials accused of negligence in security arrangements.
The government has suspended several prison personnel and transferred some officials as part of its response to the incident.
According to ANI, Theni District Jail Deputy Superintendent N. Ramalingam has also faced action. He had been serving at the jail since August 2024. The action was reportedly taken over alleged failures in prison administration and security supervision.
A total of 17 prison staff members have reportedly been suspended, and departmental inquiries have been ordered against them.
Meanwhile, PTI reported that police have recaptured all 17 prisoners who escaped from Theni District Jail. Authorities are making arrangements to transfer them to different high-security prisons across Tamil Nadu.
Following the incident, the state government has directed officials to strengthen security measures in all prisons. It has also called for a review of surveillance systems and existing security arrangements to prevent similar incidents.
Two Prisoners Escape from Puzhal High-Security Prison
The Theni incident came shortly after another prison escape in Tamil Nadu. On October 20, two prisoners escaped from Puzhal High-Security Prison near Chennai.
Police launched a massive search operation by deploying seven special teams to trace the escapees. After a two-day search, both prisoners were eventually apprehended.
Tamil Nadu Government Transfers Prison Department Chief
Two separate prison escape incidents within a week have raised serious questions about the security and monitoring systems in Tamil Nadu’s prisons.
Against this backdrop, the government has also reportedly transferred Dr. Sandeep Rai Rathore, Director General of the Prisons and Correctional Services Department.
The series of incidents has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to initiate a major review of prison security and administration. The action against officials responsible for alleged security lapses has become a major topic of discussion across the state.
The government is now focusing on strengthening surveillance, improving prison management and ensuring tighter security across all correctional facilities.
