With preparations for the upcoming local body elections gaining momentum in Andhra Pradesh, political parties have begun intensifying their organisational activities. Against this backdrop, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has issued key directions to the party’s regional coordinators, focusing on candidate selection, organisational coordination and election preparedness.
At a meeting held in Tadepalli, Jagan reportedly asked party leaders to remain prepared for what he described as possible attempts to use official machinery and political influence during the elections. He urged the party cadre to anticipate such situations and formulate alternative strategies in advance.
Jagan’s Strategy for Local Body Elections
During the meeting, Jagan discussed several issues, including the identification of candidates, consultations with party leaders and workers, and the preparation of election plans.
He stressed the need to identify strong candidates at the earliest and consult a broad section of party leaders and grassroots workers before finalising the candidate list. According to the party, candidates should be selected only after obtaining feedback through multiple rounds of discussions.
Jagan Alleges Attempts to Use Official Machinery
Jagan alleged that attempts could be made to influence the local body elections by using political and official power. He specifically referred to the possibility of pressure being exerted on opponents through the police and administrative machinery.
These are political allegations made by Jagan. The YSRCP has said that its cadre should be prepared to deal with such circumstances without backing down.
He reportedly instructed regional coordinators to formulate alternative arrangements depending on the situation in different areas and ensure that the party’s candidates and workers receive organisational support during the election process.
Focus on Identifying Strong Candidates
Jagan reportedly told the regional coordinators that candidate selection would be one of the most important aspects of the local body elections.
He asked party leaders to quickly identify candidates who have a strong presence and public recognition in their respective constituencies.
At the same time, he cautioned against finalising candidates based solely on the opinion of one individual. Instead, he asked leaders to consult senior party members, local leaders and grassroots workers before arriving at a decision.
The final candidate list, he said, should be prepared only after holding consultations at multiple levels.
One Decision Should Help the Party in Future Elections Too
Jagan reportedly stressed that decisions taken for the upcoming local body elections should also serve the party’s future political requirements.
According to the party, candidate selection should not be viewed only from the perspective of the immediate election. Leaders should also consider whether candidates can contribute to the party’s long-term organisational strength.
Candidates should have a strong local presence and the ability to take different sections of people along with them. The party has also previously emphasised the importance of consensus while selecting candidates, according to YSRCP sources.
Consult Everyone Before Finalising Candidates
Jagan advised party leaders against taking hasty decisions while selecting candidates.
The party should identify individuals who have consistently worked for the organisation while also considering those who enjoy public acceptance at the local level.
He reportedly asked regional coordinators to ensure that personal preferences and internal differences do not influence the selection process. Instead, leaders should work towards consensus and coordination.
With every vote potentially playing an important role in local body elections, the candidate’s individual strength and local standing could also influence the contest, according to reports on the meeting.
Go Door-to-Door and Explain the Government’s Performance
Jagan also asked party leaders and workers to intensify their grassroots outreach ahead of the local body elections.
He instructed the cadre to go door-to-door and explain what the YSRCP claims are the difficulties and losses faced by people during the two-and-a-half years of the Chandrababu Naidu-led government.
At the same time, he asked party workers to highlight the welfare schemes and programmes implemented during the previous YSRCP government and explain the benefits claimed to have been delivered to people.
The party’s campaign, he said, should focus on explaining the differences between the current government’s policies and the previous YSRCP administration.
Strengthen Grassroots Organisation
Jagan reportedly emphasised that organisational strength at the grassroots level would be crucial in the local body elections.
He asked the party machinery to function in coordination from the village level to the constituency level and called for greater coordination among local leaders and workers.
The local leadership should be monitored regularly and strengthened wherever necessary. He also asked party leaders to improve coordination among the cadre and prepare in advance for challenges that could arise during the election process.
Prepare Alternative Plans for Possible Challenges
Jagan reportedly directed the regional coordinators to prepare alternative plans in every area in anticipation of unexpected developments during the elections.
He asked coordinators to ensure that party candidates and workers receive support whenever required and that local issues are addressed promptly.
The regional leadership should assess the political and organisational situation in each area in advance and ensure that the party machinery is equipped to respond to emerging challenges, he said.
Key YSRCP Leaders Attend Meeting
The meeting in Tadepalli was attended by several YSRCP regional coordinators and senior leaders, including Botsa Satyanarayana, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, YV Subba Reddy, Alla Ayodhya Ramireddy, Peddireddy Mithun Reddy, Kurasala Kannababu, Gudivada Amarnath and Boodi Muthyala Naidu, among others.
The meeting reportedly focused on preparations for the upcoming local body elections, strengthening the party organisation and the process of identifying and finalising candidates.
YSRCP Steps Up Preparations Ahead of Local Polls
The meeting indicates that the YSRCP is stepping up its organisational preparations ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Andhra Pradesh.
While Jagan has asked party leaders to identify strong candidates and consult leaders and workers before finalising the list, he has also called for advance planning to deal with challenges that the party expects could arise during the election process.
From candidate selection and grassroots mobilisation to organisational coordination and contingency planning, the latest directions are aimed at preparing the YSRCP machinery well ahead of the local body elections.
