Allegations of Illegal Mining in Andhra Pradesh’s Historic and Heritage Hills

Amaravati, Sep 17: Allegations of illegal mining in hills with historical, spiritual and environmental significance have triggered a fresh debate in Andhra Pradesh following the formation of the coalition government. Local residents and opposition parties have alleged that large-scale excavation of gravel, soil and laterite is taking place in several areas using heavy machinery.

The allegations have been reported from the Turukkula Konda area near the Kodavali Buddhist site in Kakinada district, Panchadarla Konda and Ramakonda in Anakapalli district, and Gangalamamma Konda, which is associated with the caves linked to freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju. Similar allegations have also emerged from other parts of the state.

Mining Allegations Near Kodavali Buddhist Site

The Kodavali Buddhist site is believed to date back to around the 3rd century BC, giving the area significant archaeological and historical importance. Against this backdrop, allegations of extensive excavation in Turukkula Konda have raised concerns among local residents.

They fear that the use of heavy machinery for digging and removing soil and gravel could potentially damage or threaten ancient Buddhist structures and archaeological remains in the surrounding area.

Panchadarla Konda Declared a ‘No-Mining Zone’

Panchadarla Konda in Anakapalli district is another area where allegations of illegal mining have surfaced.

Local residents claim that excavation activities have continued even after the government reportedly declared the area a ‘No Mining Zone.’ Questions are therefore being raised over whether the restrictions are being effectively enforced and whether officials are taking action against alleged violations.

Concerns Over Mining Near Alluri Sitarama Raju’s Historical Caves

Mining allegations have also emerged from Gangalamamma Konda, an area associated with the historical legacy of Alluri Sitarama Raju.

According to local claims, large-scale excavation is being carried out in the region. Residents and activists have expressed concern that continued mining could pose a threat to the caves and other locations associated with Alluri’s revolutionary movement.

Given the historical significance of the area, demands have been raised for greater protection and monitoring of the region.

Allegations From Chodavaram and Nakkapalli

Similar complaints have reportedly come from areas including Chodavaram and Nakkapalli, where hills are allegedly being excavated for gravel and soil.

Residents claim that heavy machinery is being used for excavation and transportation of the material. They have raised questions about whether the mining activities have the required permissions and whether environmental and land-use regulations are being followed.

Opposition Alleges Political Backing

Opposition parties have alleged that some of the illegal mining activities are taking place with the alleged support of ruling-party leaders. They have also alleged that money is being paid to officials in connection with mining operations.

These are political allegations, and their veracity would need to be established through official investigations and evidence.

Questions Over Government Action

The controversy has raised broader questions about the protection of Andhra Pradesh’s historical and ecological heritage. Critics argue that areas with archaeological, spiritual and environmental significance require stricter monitoring and enforcement of mining restrictions.

The key questions now being raised are whether the alleged excavations have received the necessary permissions, whether protected or ‘No Mining Zone’ restrictions are being violated, and what action authorities are taking against any violations.

With concerns growing over possible damage to historical sites and the environment, residents and opposition groups are demanding effective government intervention to protect the affected hills and heritage locations.
