AP and Telangana clash over Krishna water sharing; no consensus reached on allocations.

A crucial meeting between Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana on the allocation of Krishna river water for drinking water requirements under the jurisdiction of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has concluded.

The two states presented different arguments over the sharing of Krishna water for drinking water purposes. Officials said that around 142 TMC of water is currently available within the KRMB jurisdiction.

Telangana Seeks 50:50 Water Sharing

Telangana has sought the allocation of Krishna water for drinking water requirements in a 50:50 ratio, according to the state’s Engineer-in-Chief (ENC).

The Telangana ENC said that Andhra Pradesh, on the other hand, was demanding water allocation in a 66:34 ratio. Telangana strongly opposed the AP proposal, he said.

Telangana officials reportedly pointed out during the meeting that Andhra Pradesh was already diverting Krishna water through the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator.

Telangana argued that the available water should be shared equally between the two states to meet their drinking water requirements.

Three-Member Committee Meeting Ends Without Consensus

Meanwhile, the meeting of the three-member committee ended without a satisfactory outcome, according to the Andhra Pradesh ENC.

Andhra Pradesh demanded that Telangana’s hydropower generation at Nagarjuna Sagar should be stopped. AP also sought the allocation of Krishna water in a 66:34 ratio to meet its drinking water requirements.

In addition, Andhra Pradesh urged the KRMB to release 97 TMC of water, taking into consideration the state’s drinking water needs.

Officials said that the meeting involved detailed discussions on the demands raised by both states, the water available in the reservoirs, and the drinking water requirements of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

KRMB Decision on Water Release Crucial

With no consensus emerging between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the sharing of Krishna water, the next course of action by the KRMB has become crucial.

The board’s decision on the water-sharing ratio and the release of water for drinking water requirements is expected to play an important role in determining the next steps in the ongoing dispute between the two states.
