Recalling the developments surrounding Chittoor Dairy in the past, allegations are now emerging that a similar kind of political interference is taking place in the case of Vijaya Dairy (Krishna Milk Union). Critics have once again alleged that cooperative dairies are being weakened to serve the interests of Heritage Dairy.
Chittoor Dairy: From a Small Chilling Plant to a Leading Cooperative
Chittoor Dairy, which began as a small chilling plant in 1945, grew into one of the country’s prominent milk cooperative institutions by 1988. However, critics allege that the dairy began facing difficulties after the expansion of Heritage Dairy in 1992.
They claim that a decline in milk procurement and the accumulation of pending payments to farmers pushed the cooperative into financial difficulties. Eventually, the dairy was shut down on August 31, 2002. The issue also triggered intense political debate in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly at the time.
Revival of Chittoor Dairy Under the YS Jagan Government
YSRCP leaders recall that the YS Jagan government initiated measures to revive Chittoor Dairy. According to the party, steps were taken to clear the dairy’s debts and attract investment through a partnership with Amul.
The revival process gained momentum in 2023, with efforts aimed at restoring the cooperative dairy and bringing it back into operation.
Vijaya Dairy: A Major Cooperative Institution
Meanwhile, the developments surrounding Vijaya Dairy, also known as Krishna Milk Union, have become a major political talking point.
The cooperative reportedly has the participation of around 1.5 lakh families and sells approximately 4.60 lakh litres of milk every day. It also offers nearly 84 varieties of milk and dairy products.
As part of its expansion plans, the organization has established a second unit at Veeravalli in Bapulapadu Mandal, with the objective of increasing milk procurement and production capacity.
Allegations of Political Pressure
Critics allege that the expansion of Vijaya Dairy could increase competition for Heritage Dairy, and that this is one of the reasons behind the alleged pressure on the cooperative institution.
Particular attention has been drawn to approximately 24 acres of valuable dairy land in the Gannavaram area. Opposition voices have alleged that influential figures in the government are interested in these valuable properties.

Vijaya Dairy Chairman’s Resignation Sparks Controversy
The resignation of Chalasani Anjaneyulu, who was unanimously elected as the chairman of Vijaya Dairy, has further intensified the controversy.
Critics allege that he faced pressure and threats from ministers and other political leaders. There have also been allegations that he was made to resign while he was undergoing treatment in a hospital due to ill health.
