YSRCP’s Protest Against Illegal Mining Reaches Turning Point

The YSR Congress Party’s campaign to protect the historic and spiritually significant Panchadarla Hill in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district from alleged illegal mining has reached a major turning point. Following sustained protests by local residents, demonstrations led by YSRCP leaders, and the party’s “Chalo Panchadarla” movement, the Andhra Pradesh government has finally responded.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to halt mining activities in the area and initiate steps to declare Panchadarla a “No Mining Zone.” The decision is being seen as a direct response to mounting public pressure and political agitation.

Ancient Temple and Sacred Water Sources Under Threat

Panchadarla Hill is home to the nearly 1,200-year-old Sri Uma Dharmalingeswara Swamy Temple, one of the region’s most revered spiritual landmarks. Local residents have alleged that illegal gravel mining has polluted the hill’s natural springs, resulting in muddy water flowing near the temple premises and threatening its ecological and religious significance.

YSRCP leaders, including Gudivada Amarnath and Kurasala Kannababu, led large-scale protests demanding that Panchadarla be permanently declared a mining-free zone. They argued that the area’s heritage and fragile ecosystem must be protected from commercial exploitation.

Government Orders Action Amid Growing Pressure

With the agitation gaining momentum, the government appears to have softened its stand. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan reportedly instructed officials to revoke environmental clearances granted for the mining activities and ordered an investigation into the contamination of the natural springs by scientists from the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH).

The move has gained political significance, as it is viewed as an acknowledgment of the concerns raised by local communities and the opposition.

Why Silence Over Simhachalam Hill?

While the government’s decision on Panchadarla has been welcomed, it has also triggered fresh questions over its approach toward Simhachalam Hill in Visakhapatnam.

Environmental activists have expressed serious concerns over the allocation of nearly 160 acres of land on the slopes of Simhachalam Hill for a proposed Google Data Center. Critics allege that the project has been fast-tracked under the Category B-2 environmental clearance process, which does not require a public hearing, thereby bypassing broader public consultation.

Environmental Concerns Surround Google Data Center Project

Experts warn that the proposed project could have significant environmental consequences. According to environmentalists, it may affect the Mudasarlova Reservoir and the nearby Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, both of which are ecologically sensitive areas.

Questions have also been raised over the project’s water requirements, with experts claiming there is a considerable gap between the government’s projected water consumption figures and independent estimates.

These concerns have intensified demands for greater transparency and a comprehensive environmental assessment before the project moves forward.

Political Debate Intensifies in North Andhra

The government’s decision to halt mining at Panchadarla is now being contrasted with its stance on the Simhachalam project. Opposition parties, environmentalists, and civil society groups are questioning whether the government is yielding to public pressure in one case while prioritizing large corporate investments in another.

The debate has become a major political issue in North Andhra, with increasing calls for the government to extend the same level of environmental protection to Simhachalam Hill as it has promised for Panchadarla.

Many activists and intellectuals argue that if Panchadarla deserves preservation because of its ecological, cultural, and religious significance, then Simhachalam a similarly sensitive heritage landscape should receive equal protection.
