Boat Accident Triggers Statewide Concern
The boat accident off the coast of Visakhapatnam, in which six fishermen went missing, has triggered widespread concern across Andhra Pradesh. In the aftermath of the tragedy, fishermen’s communities have expressed strong anger over the government’s response, alleging that delays in launching rescue operations significantly reduced the chances of saving lives.
According to the victims and local fishing communities, the crucial hours immediately after the accident were wasted due to administrative inaction, leading to growing criticism of the authorities.
Eight-Hour Delay in Rescue Under Fire
The accident reportedly occurred around 3:30 PM on July 4. Information about the incident reached the Revenue Department by evening and was later communicated to marine authorities. However, rescue operations reportedly did not begin until the following morning.
Survivor Kari Chinna, who managed to escape the accident, stated that timely rescue efforts could have saved more lives. His account has intensified questions over the alleged eight-hour delay, which has now become the central issue in the controversy.
Minister’s Remarks Deepen Families’ Distress
The comments made by Minister Kollu Ravindra after the incident have also drawn criticism. His statement that the missing fishermen were “confirmed to be no more” caused deep emotional distress among the families, who were still hoping for their loved ones’ safe return.
Relatives and fishermen’s associations condemned such remarks, saying they were insensitive and premature at a time when search efforts were still underway.
Search Operation Deadline Faces Backlash
Further criticism emerged after the Fisheries Commissioner announced that the search operation would conclude by the evening of July 7. Although the deadline was later extended until midnight following protests from the victims’ families, fishermen’s organizations alleged that the extension was merely symbolic.
After conducting search operations for nearly 72 hours, the Coast Guard reportedly suspended active rescue efforts after failing to locate the missing fishermen, leading to greater dissatisfaction among the affected families.
Fishermen Protest at Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour
Public anger intensified when fishermen and women protested at the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour, blocking Minister Kollu Ravindra’s convoy.
Demanding that the search continue until the missing fishermen are found, family members surrounded the minister’s vehicle. Police later intervened and forcibly removed the protesters, creating a tense atmosphere at the harbour.
Questions Over Emergency Response
Fishermen’s groups have questioned why emergency night-time search operations were not carried out despite the availability of advanced radar systems, helicopters, and other rescue resources.
They argue that every hour is critical in maritime rescue missions and allege that the authorities failed to utilize available technology effectively during the crucial initial phase.
Demand for Continued Search and Justice
Fishermen’s associations have demanded that search operations continue until the six missing fishermen are located. They have also called on the government to ensure complete transparency in the rescue process and provide full support and justice to the affected families.
