Times have changed. Politics has evolved. Governments have come and gone. Yet, whenever former united Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) is remembered, the emotional connection among people remains unmistakable.
Nearly two decades after his untimely demise, YSR continues to evoke memories of hope, welfare, and compassionate governance. Discussions on farmers’ welfare, healthcare, education, or social security almost inevitably bring his name into the conversation.
On July 8, as people commemorate his 77th birth anniversary, supporters and beneficiaries of landmark welfare schemes such as Aarogyasri, Fee Reimbursement, and Free Power for Farmers are remembering his contributions with gratitude.
From Doctor to People’s Leader
Born on July 8, 1949, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy began his career as a medical doctor, serving patients with dedication. However, his concern for society extended far beyond hospital walls.
The hardships of farmers, the struggles of rural families, and the challenges faced by the poor drew him into public life. Over a political career spanning more than three decades, he served in multiple roles including MLA, MP, Leader of the Opposition, and eventually Chief Minister.
He led the united Andhra Pradesh as Chief Minister from 2004 to 2009, leaving behind a governance model that many continue to discuss even today.
For many, YSR embodied the belief that “It is not how long one lives, but how one lives that truly matters.”
Praja Prasthanam: The Walk That Changed Andhra Politics
YSR’s Praja Prasthanam Padayatra, launched on April 9, 2003, was more than a political campaign.
Walking nearly 1,467 kilometres through the scorching summer, he visited villages across the state, listening directly to farmers burdened by debt, families struggling for drinking water, students unable to pursue education, and ordinary citizens battling poverty.
People did not merely see a politician during the march they saw someone willing to hear their pain.
That emotional bond translated into a decisive public mandate in the 2004 Assembly elections.
Immediately after assuming office as Chief Minister, YSR signed the file approving free electricity for farmers, fulfilling one of his key election promises.
Farmer-Centric Vision and Jalayagnam
YSR strongly believed that the prosperity of the state depended on the well-being of its farmers.
With this vision, his government launched the ambitious Jalayagnam irrigation programme. Numerous irrigation projects were initiated, several were completed, and many others witnessed significant progress.
Plans were designed to provide irrigation to nearly 1.3 million acres of farmland. The long-awaited Polavaram Project, considered the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh, also began taking shape during his tenure.
Welfare That Reached Every Household
Under YSR’s leadership, welfare was not merely a list of government schemes—it became a source of hope for millions of families.
Aarogyasri: Affordable Healthcare
The Aarogyasri health insurance programme enabled poor families to access expensive medical treatments without financial distress.
For thousands who had once feared hospital expenses, it became a lifeline.
The 108 Emergency Ambulance Service, introduced during his tenure, transformed emergency healthcare by saving countless lives across the state.
Making Higher Education Accessible
YSR’s Fee Reimbursement Scheme opened the doors of higher education for lakhs of economically disadvantaged students.
His assurance—
“Study as much as you wish; it is the government’s responsibility to support your education.”
became a source of confidence for an entire generation.
Even today, fee reimbursement remains one of the most influential educational welfare initiatives in the Telugu states.
Empowering Women and Rural Communities
YSR’s administration introduced several initiatives aimed at strengthening rural society.
These included:
- Interest subsidy (“Pavala Vaddi”) for women’s Self-Help Groups
- Pension schemes for senior citizens
- Housing assistance for poor families
- Distribution of land rights to tribal communities
- Rural development programmes
- Strengthening implementation of employment guarantee schemes
His governance reflected an effort to ensure that welfare reached every section of society.
A Leader Known for His Personal Connect
Beyond policies, YSR is remembered for his warmth and accessibility.
His familiar greetings—
“Namaste Babu… Namaste Papa… Namaste Akkayya… Namaste Chellemma…”
were more than words.
Supporters recall them as expressions of genuine affection, making every individual feel personally acknowledged.
A Journey That Did Not End With Death
On September 2, 2009, YSR lost his life in a tragic helicopter crash, plunging the then united Andhra Pradesh into deep mourning.
Thousands of people gathered spontaneously across towns and villages to pay tribute, reflecting the extraordinary bond he had built with the public.
Although governments and political landscapes have changed over the years, memories of YSR continue to evoke strong emotions among many people.
