Nine Years On, Family Says Justice Still Elusive
The mother of Sugali Preethi, whose case shook Andhra Pradesh, has said that her fight for justice continues even after nine years. Parvathi Devi, the victim’s mother, alleged that the case was used for political gains and that the promises made before elections were not fulfilled after coming to power.
She accused Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan of making political commitments in the name of her daughter’s case but failing to deliver justice after assuming office.
Claims on Compensation and Benefits Are Misleading, Says Parvathi Devi
Responding to Pawan Kalyan’s claim that his intervention helped the family receive compensation, land, and employment, Parvathi Devi said the facts tell a different story.
According to her, she had already secured a job in the Medical Department under the disabled quota in 2013. She stated that during the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government, the family received the legally entitled benefits in November 2021, including:
- ₹8 lakh financial assistance
- Five cents of house site
- Five acres of agricultural land
- Employment for her husband
She alleged that false narratives were being spread to mislead the public and tarnish her image.
SIT Probe Began Under Jagan Government
Parvathi Devi recalled that after the YSRCP government came to power, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional SP Rama Devi was constituted in October 2019 to investigate the case.
She said that although Pawan Kalyan demanded a CBI investigation in 2020, the destruction of evidence had allegedly taken place between 2017 and 2019, before the SIT was formed. Therefore, she rejected claims that evidence was tampered with during the Jagan government, describing such allegations as politically motivated.
She also referred to the recent submission made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) before the court, stating that the agency expressed its inability to take up the investigation due to a shortage of resources.
‘First Signature’ Promise Was Never Honoured
Parvathi Devi said that during the election campaign, Pawan Kalyan had promised that his first official signature after assuming office would be on the Sugali Preethi case and assured the family that he would fight until the accused were punished.
However, she alleged that after becoming Deputy Chief Minister, he completely changed his stand. She criticized his argument that no action could now be taken because evidence had been destroyed, calling it irresponsible.
According to her, the destruction of evidence had taken place during the previous TDP government, not during the YSRCP administration.
Complaint Filed Against Pawan Kalyan
Parvathi Devi said she has lodged a complaint at the Gannavaram Police Station, seeking action against Pawan Kalyan under sections related to cheating and criminal breach of trust.
She alleged that he had won her family’s confidence, used her daughter’s tragic death for political mileage, and later abandoned the assurances he had given.
Alleges Online Harassment by Jana Sena Supporters
She further claimed that ever since filing the complaint, she has been subjected to online harassment by Jana Sena Party workers and individuals associated with the party’s social media wing.
According to her, coordinated trolling and personal attacks on digital platforms have caused severe mental distress.
Questions Law and Order Under Coalition Government
Expressing anguish over the developments, Parvathi Devi asked, “Is this the kind of justice people receive under the coalition government when they seek justice?”
She also alleged that police prevented her from conducting a wheelchair march on the occasion of her daughter’s death anniversary by placing her under house arrest.
Concluding her remarks, she accused Pawan Kalyan of using her daughter’s death for political advantage and alleged that there are now attempts to protect the accused instead of ensuring justice.
