Fuel Price Politics in Andhra Pradesh: Have Election Promises Been Forgotten?

Rising Fuel Prices Spark Fresh Political Debate in Andhra Pradesh

Fuel prices are an issue in Andhra Pradesh again. The leaders from the Telugu Desam Party Jana Sena and BJP who criticized the YSR Congress Party government for petrol and diesel prices are now in power themselves. During the elections these leaders said they would control fuel prices and reduce taxes if they were voted into office. Now people are asking what happened to those promises.

Opposition Promises Now Under Public Scrutiny

When the YSRCP government was in power leaders like N. Chandrababu Naidu, Nara Lokesh and Pawan Kalyan said the government was making life hard for people with fuel prices. Nara Lokesh even protested at petrol stations during the Yuva Galam padayatra. The coalitions promises about fuel prices are still shared on media.

Now that they are in power with the BJPs support people are asking why fuel prices are still high and why they have not kept their promises.

Fuel Price History Tells a Story

People who study politics say that the history of fuel prices is more complicated than what politicians say.

When Chandrababu Naidu became Chief Minister in 2014 petrol prices in Amaravati were around ₹69.60 per litre. By the time his government ended in 2019 prices had gone up to ₹86.71 per litre. That means petrol prices went up by ₹17 during the five years the TDP was in power. These numbers were even mentioned in the Assembly at the time.

YSRCP Government and the ₹1 Road Development Cess

After the YSRCP government came to power in 2019 they added a ₹1 Road Development Cess on petrol and diesel in September 2020. This made petrol prices go up from ₹86.71 to ₹87.71 per litre.

The YSRCP government said they had to do this because of debts and interest from road development loans taken during the TDP government. Critics said that loans worth ₹3,000 crore taken for road restoration during 2017-18 were used for other things leaving a burden on the next government.

Central Government Tax Hikes and Pandemic Impact

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the world economy after 2020. The central government increased taxes on fuel a lot during this time. Central taxes on petrol went up from around ₹20 to ₹33 per litre making fuel prices go up sharply across India.

In May 2021 petrol and diesel prices were increased 18 times. Petrol prices in Andhra Pradesh went above ₹111 per litre. Although the central government later reduced prices by ₹5 during the Deepavali season many people said it did not help much.

Political Criticism Over “Double Standards”

During that time TDP and Jana Sena leaders campaigned against the YSRCP government saying that fuel prices were high because of state policies.. Now critics say that these leaders are quiet about the central governments decisions after they formed an alliance with the BJP.

Recent increases under the NDA government have added around ₹3.30 on petrol and ₹3.14 on diesel. This has made petrol prices in Andhra Pradesh go above ₹113 per litre and diesel close to ₹101. People are criticizing this. Asking if the blame will again be put on the previous government.

Public Questions Coalition Government’s Commitments

Many people are asking why leaders who spoke out for people when they were in opposition are not doing the same now that they’re in power.

Political observers think that people are getting unhappy because the coalition government has not done anything to help despite being friends with the government. Critics say that the promises made during elections seem like politics than real help.

Impact of Fuel Price Hikes on Common People

High fuel prices affect more than car owners. They make the prices of things and daily goods go up.

Farmers are especially affected because high diesel prices make it cost more to run their machines and transport things. Auto drivers, transport operators and small businesses that are already struggling fear that more fuel price increases will make things worse.

Demand for Immediate Relief Measures

Many people are asking the coalition government to keep their election promises by reducing state taxes on fuel and putting pressure on the government to help. They want Andhra Pradesh to have fuel prices, not some of the highest.

Political circles are warning that if something is not done soon people may think that past criticisms and promises about fuel prices were, for votes not because they really care about people.
