Chandrababu Naidu’s Delhi Home Makeover Sparks Debate Amid Cost-Cutting Push

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi is talking about saving fuel and reducing government spending a big decision by the Andhra Pradesh government has started a controversy.

The Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to spend ₹6.50 crore to upgrade and modernize Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s home in New Delhi. This decision has become a topic of debate.

₹6.50 Crore for Home Modernization

The government said that Bungalow No.1 at Janpath in New Delhi which is the home of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister needs an upgrade.

The existing structure has problems like ventilation, insufficient natural lighting, plumbing issues and leakages. Officials suggested a makeover to improve functionality and administrative use.

The project will be done by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC).

Luxury Features in the Upgrade Plan

The proposed renovation includes high-end changes. Some of the features are:

  • Redesigning washrooms
  • Installing fittings and fixtures
  • Expanding wardrobes
  • Adding dressing rooms
  • Building a dining hall for 21 people
  • Creating a waiting area for visitors
  • Having VIP entry access
  • Making an entrance for staff
  • Using marble and wooden flooring
  • Installing premium lighting systems
  • Adding furniture and artistic interior décor

The luxury features like Italian marble flooring have drawn criticism from opposition parties and some social media users.

Timing of the Decision Raises Questions

The controversy has grown because the decision comes when the central government is focusing on saving money and fuel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been talking about reducing convoy sizes using vehicles and minimizing unnecessary government spending. Critics argue that spending crores on luxury upgrades sends a message.

Opposition leaders have questioned whether such expenditure is justified when the state is dealing with pressures.

Opposition Calls It Misuse of Public Funds

Several opposition leaders have termed the expenditure as a “misuse of money.” They demand transparency regarding the necessity and scale of the renovation.

Critics argue that while governments often justify residence upgrades as administrative requirements the inclusion of luxury interiors raises concerns about priorities in public spending.

The issue has gained traction on media, where users are debating whether the renovation is essential or an example of excessive government expenditure.

Government Defends the Project

Government sources maintain that the renovation is purely administrative and aimed at improving the functionality and safety of the residence.

Officials argue that the building required modernization due to structural and maintenance-related issues. They insist the project is not about luxury but about upgrading an official state property.

“Austerity vs Luxury” Becomes Political Talking Point

The controversy surrounding the Delhi residence upgrade has become a political narrative, about public spending and governance priorities.

While the Andhra Pradesh government describes the project as modernization critics continue to question whether such large-scale expenditure is appropriate.

As reactions continue to grow the debate has centered around one question:

Is this an essential administrative upgrade. Or an avoidable luxury expense funded by taxpayers?
